ExpertGate Interview Series with Dr. Nadine Campbell
Johh: Hello everyone, my name is John, and welcome to the ExpertGate Interview Series. Today, we are privileged to have Dr. Nadine Campbell with us. Dr. Campbell is an accomplished academic and industry consultant with over 25 years of experience in organizational behavior, industrial relations, and Human Resource Management. She is currently a lecturer and program adviser at Western Sydney University and serves as the international lead for the USA, facilitating international collaboration and partnerships. Dr. Campbell is also the Managing Director of Abdos Academy and a dedicated mentor for underserved communities through the Campbell and Campbell Enterprises Foundation.
Dr. Campbell, thank you so much for joining us today. Could you please share with us an overview of your journey and what inspired you to pursue a career in these fields?
Dr. Nadine Campbell:
Hi John, thanks for having me. My mom always said it was a calling to be an academic. As a child, I would line up my dolls and teach them. When I went to Berkeley, it opened up a new world for me. I started my career in space defense and moved into management consulting, but my passion was always in academia and teaching.
My parents and I started the Campbell and Campbell Enterprises in the US because, originally, we’re from Jamaica. Coming from a third-world country, we had many friends coming to the US who had no idea about the educational system and what they needed to do. Nobody knew what an SAT was. That was my starting point for helping disadvantaged students.
I later moved to Sydney to pursue a PhD and ended up working at Western Sydney University as an academic. Through my role as an international lead and a subject called Business Academic Skills (BAS), which you yourself took, John, I saw a great need among international students. They face challenges with adapting to a new culture, dealing with a new version of English, and understanding academic literacy.
Living in multiple English-speaking countries like Canada, the US, and Australia—and having a husband from England—I realized not all English is the same. It’s almost like learning a new language. Through BAS, I’ve been able to educate students on how to read and analyze academic materials, which ties back into what ExpertGate is doing.
Johh: Wonderful, wonderful. That’s quite a journey—from Jamaica to Australia, and engaging with such diverse communities. BAS, or Business Academic Skills, is indeed a critical component for success in any field.
Dr. Campbell, as you engage with ExpertGate, what types of projects or collaborations are you most excited to pursue? Are there particular areas where you believe your expertise could make a significant impact?
Dr. Nadine Campbell:
I’m really excited about working on a Discovery Project Grant, particularly an ARC Grant, focusing on preparing graduates for Industry 5.0. This involves the collaboration between educational institutions and industries.
As someone who’s always been a tech enthusiast—long before Marvel became popular—I’ve been fascinated by AI. For instance, Marvel introduced J.A.R.V.I.S., an AI assistant, which is now akin to modern tools. However, using AI effectively requires critical analysis skills.
For example, when Tony Stark tells J.A.R.V.I.S. what to do, he needs to analyze the AI’s response critically. Similarly, in Industry 5.0, educational institutions must teach students to differentiate between description, analysis, and recommendations. Industries can then provide practical experiences to align with this academic foundation. This collaboration excites me the most.
Johh: That’s very exciting and makes total sense, Dr. Campbell. AI is indeed a tool, and without the necessary language and critical thinking skills to interact with it, its potential cannot be fully realized.
Now, at ExpertGate, we emphasize social impact and equitable access to education and resources. How do you see your work, particularly in mentoring and international education, contributing toward positive social change?
Dr. Nadine Campbell:
I’m in discussions with Muhammad, your principal, to bring my organization, Abdos Academy, to the ExpertGate platform. Abdos Academy focuses on academic literacy, especially for students from third-world countries. Many of them believe passing the Cambridge IELTS exam is enough, but they aren’t truly prepared academically.
By collaborating with ExpertGate, I plan to offer self-paced, online courses at reduced prices and, additionally, face-to-face weekend courses in these countries. This combination can create significant social impact by preparing students for Industry 5.0 while making education more accessible.
Host: Wonderful! At ExpertGate, we are committed to supporting underprivileged communities through Industry 5.0-focused education. Adding on to what you mentioned earlier, how can universities and industries enhance these efforts? What roles can they play to maximize impact?
Dr. Nadine Campbell:
We need to prioritize sustainability and emotional intelligence. Communities benefit when individuals we support return to their home countries and pay it forward. The social impact is immeasurable and extends far beyond monetary value.
Universities and industries must understand the diverse needs of individuals, especially international students. Many of them work full-time—although they aren’t supposed to—because living in countries like Australia is expensive. I’ve been an international student myself and understand their struggles.
Australians often don’t realize how privileged they are with accessible education. In the US, university tuition can exceed $200,000 a year. Supporting students from underprivileged backgrounds and breaking down barriers is vital for creating a sustainable and equitable global community.
Johh: Most definitely, Dr. Campbell. Developing these skills for students from diverse backgrounds leads to lasting social impact. It’s truly inspiring to see this passion reflected in your work and the potential partnership with ExpertGate.
Dr. Campbell, thank you so much for sharing your insights and expertise with us today. Your dedication to education, mentorship, and international collaboration is truly inspiring. We look forward to seeing the positive impact you will create through ExpertGate.
